Trincomalee

The Koneswaram Temple, perched dramatically on Swami Rock 160 metres above the sea, is one of the most important Hindu temples in Sri Lanka and one of the Pancha Ishwarams (five abodes of Shiva). The temple’s location provides breathtaking panoramic ocean views, and the site has been a place of worship since at least the 3rd century BC. Fort Frederick, built by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch and British, encloses the temple area. The beaches of Nilaveli and Uppuveli, just north of the city, are among the most beautiful in Sri Lanka long stretches of powdery white sand lapped by calm, turquoise waters. Pigeon Island, a short boat ride offshore, is a Marine National Park offering some of the best snorkelling in Sri Lanka, with vibrant coral reefs and blacktip reef sharks.

Trincomalee is one of the world’s premier whale watching destinations. Between May and October, blue whales (the largest animals ever to have lived on Earth) can be spotted just a few kilometres offshore, along with sperm whales, Bryde’s whales, and large pods of dolphins. The Kanniya Hot Springs, seven geothermal springs with varying temperatures, are a unique geological and cultural attraction.The city’s strategic harbour has attracted traders and conquerors for millennia the Portuguese, Dutch, and British all valued it as a naval base. The British Admiralty once described Trincomalee as ‘the finest harbour in the world.’ World War II saw the harbour play a crucial role as a Allied naval base. After decades of isolation during the civil war, Trincomalee has re-emerged as one of Sri Lanka’s most exciting destinations, offering visitors the rare combination of cultural depth, natural beauty, and the authentic, unspoilt character of a place not yet overwhelmed by mass tourism.
