Ella

The hike to Little Adam’s Peak (1,141 metres) is a gentle 45-minute walk through tea bushes to a ridge with 360-degree views across the Ella Gap — a dramatic cleft in the mountain wall where the highlands drop away to the southern coastal plain. On clear mornings, the view extends all the way to the southern coast, and the sunrise from the summit is truly magical. The Nine Arches Bridge, a stunning colonial-era railway viaduct built entirely of stone and brick without any steel reinforcement, has become one of Sri Lanka’s most photographed landmarks. The bridge spans 91 metres across a forested valley, and watching a blue train rumble across its arches is an iconic Sri Lankan experience. Local legend credits the construction to a local artisan after British engineers abandoned the project due to steel shortages during World War I.

Ella Rock, a more challenging 2–3 hour hike, rewards climbers with sweeping views of the Badulla valley and the surrounding mountain ranges. The trail passes through eucalyptus plantations and along the railway track before ascending through forest to the summit. Ravana Falls, a cascading waterfall visible from the main road, is associated with the Ramayana legend of Ravana hiding Sita. The village itself is a charming collection of guesthouses, cafés, and restaurants serving both local and international cuisine. The cool mountain air, friendly atmosphere, and stunning views from virtually every café terrace make Ella an ideal place to slow down and savour the hill country experience. Ella also serves as a gateway to some of Sri Lanka’s most scenic train journeys. The ride from Nuwara Eliya or Kandy to Ella is regularly cited as one of the world’s most beautiful railway journeys, winding through tea plantations, over viaducts, and past waterfalls with ever-changing mountain vistas at every turn.
