Nalanda Gedige

The temple’s design is architecturally distinctive: it combines a Buddhist vihara layout with Hindu sculptural details, including a mandapa (hall) leading to the inner sanctum and erotic carvings more typical of South Indian temples. This syncretic style suggests a period of cultural transition, likely dating to the 8th–10th centuries AD, when both Buddhist and Hindu traditions coexisted and influenced each other on the island.

The structure was originally built on a site that was later submerged by the Bowatenne Reservoir. In the 1980s, the entire temple was painstakingly dismantled and reconstructed on a nearby hilltop, stone by stone, to save it from the rising waters a remarkable feat of archaeological conservation that preserved the building’s original proportions and alignment. The temple faces east, and the entrance features a carved stone doorframe with miniature relief figures. The interior is small and dimly lit, creating an intimate atmosphere that contrasts with the openness of Sri Lanka’s larger temple complexes. The surrounding landscape of rice paddies and forested hills adds to the site’s peaceful, contemplative character.

A small geodetic marker near the temple identifies the exact geographical centre of Sri Lanka, making this the symbolic heart of the island. The site receives few visitors compared to nearby Sigiriya and Dambulla, allowing for an unhurried, personal experience. Nalanda Gedige’s significance lies not in grandeur but in its uniqueness — it is the only building in Sri Lanka that so clearly demonstrates the fusion of Buddhist and Hindu architectural traditions, and its central location makes it a symbolic and spiritual waypoint on any journey through the island.
